The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports that job seekers age 25 to 64 in 2017 made up nearly three-quarters of the total Australian population, and were earning on average $40,000 per year.

For those who were younger, this figure was closer to $26,000.

For job seekers aged 35 to 54, the figure was around $27,000, while for those aged 55 to 64, it was around the same amount.

If you’re a young, fresh-faced professional, you may want to look at a different job that’s more flexible and that doesn’t require you to commute or work overtime.

For someone who wants to be more flexible, the Australian Bureau’s 2017 Workplace Outlook article suggests looking at positions that require at least 30 per cent of your time to be dedicated to work.

For example, you might be asked to work from home or be home with children.

It’s important to note that while this sounds like a good deal, you’re likely to be paid less than if you did the same job in a more traditional setting.

If your employer doesn’t offer flexible working arrangements, it may be easier to get by by on tips and holiday.

For some employers, the amount of overtime you receive is less important than the amount you earn, which may mean you can negotiate better working conditions.
